The Tribulation Period's main purposes are:

God has held off a judgment against the nations of the world and the Tribulation Period is a fulfillment of many prophetic scriptures. The most well-known prophecy is the 70th Week described in the Book of Daniel.

There are many wonderful promises that are prophesized in the scriptures that have to do with Israel and Jesus Christ, that have yet to be fulfilled. Israel, after recognizing Jesus Christ as the Messiah, will have many roles to perform during the Tribulation Period and the Millennial Kingdom.
With all of the history of Israel as a people and as a nation, the world cannot explain how Israel exists with all of the multiple genocide attempts. In fact, if Israel as a people had ceased to exist, then the Bible can be dismissed as a myth. The current regathering was predicted in many, many scriptures such as Isaiah 11:11-12 and Ezekiel 37:11-25. Before the Great Tribulation, the city of Jerusalem will be possessed by others until the time, known as the Fullness of the Gentiles and the Dispensation of Grace / Time of Gentiles, will be fulfilled.

The next questions to consider are:
The answer to the first questions, is God still has unconditional promises to Israel that still will be fulfilled in the Millennial Kingdom. The second question's answer is Israel will recognize their Messiah Jesus Christ and during the last 3.5 years of the Tribulation Period, God will use 144,000 Jewish men to evangelize the world along with many other methods that include, but not limited to, the Holy Spirit, Angels and the Two Witnesses. Those people of Israel that survives the Tribulation Period and all the Gentiles that survive that accept Jesus Christ as their Savior will repopulate the Earth during the Millennial Kingdom.
Many ask why is Lucifer and Satanic Forces still active in the world if Jesus completed His mission to redeem mankind on the Cross?
Lucifer is still trying to thwart the plan of God by trying to eliminate all Jews from the planet so that Israel cannot recognize their Savior, the Son who they pierced, John 19:37, and ask Him to return, which is a prerequisite to His Second Coming. In other words, if there are no Jewish people left alive ** on the planet Earth then the Anti-Christ cannot be stopped because Jesus Christ will not be returning, per the Scriptures.
The tribulation period is for Israel to recognize their Messiah and Son, which they will do. If Jesus Christ does not return, in Lucifer's hopes, then the Tribulation Period will continue. Obviously, God's plans will absolutely succeed and Israel will petition God for Jesus Christ to return.

them and cast lots for my clothing. Jesus on the Cross is looking at the Satanic Realm around Him watching to see what the Plan of God was doing. Bashan is the stronghold area in the modern-day Syria which was one of the areas that Israel had to fight against when coming into the Exodus. |

The forth coming Tribulation Period is not for Gentiles on Earth***, albeit Gentiles and Jewish people will still be Saved in great numbers through the work of the Holy Spirit in:
The Tribulation Period is for Israel**** to be pushed to a place where they, as a nation, will recognize their Messiah and they will.
** Note that Satanic Forces attempts to wipe out Jewish people from the entire earth is more than a strong hatred because of the Messiah coming from Israel, but it is because elimination would mean they will stop the plans of God which includes Lucifer and Fallen Angels eventual destination of the Lake of Fire. There have been many attempts to wipe out all of the Jews on the planet, along with the Royal Blood Line, and none have been successful. For example, there was Hayman in the Book of Esther who was the Adolf Hitler of that time. In the Tribulation Period there will be great loss of life to Israel at the hands of the Anti-Christ.
*** The scriptures point to the very important fact that the True Believers, who are Saved, will be Raptured before the start of the Tribulation Period. The True Believers are all peoples that have made Jesus Christ their personal Savior.
**** Israel here is mentioned as those who are of Israel who have not accepted Jesus Christ as their Messiah.
Parts of this are an excerpt from the Twelve Tribes topic. Israel will recognize their Messiah during the Tribulation Period and during the period many Jewish people will recognize the Messiah Jesus Christ and then began a world-wide evangelistic process.
There will be 144,000 Virgin men selected from 12 of the 14 tribes as described in the Book of Revelation. The tribes of Dan and Ephraim are omitted from the list. The 144,000 Witnesses will be marked in their foreheads so that nothing can hurt them while they are on their mission. They are receiving divine protection from God.

The mission and the 144,000 Jewish "Evangelist" Witnesses, that are protected from the judgments occurring in the last 3.5 years of the Tribulation Period, is to spread the good news of Jesus Christ as the Savior of the World. Many people will be Saved during that period of time.
All 14 tribes have representatives who make it into the 1,000-year millennium kingdom from the scriptural references in Ezekiel 48. Regarding the two Tribes not mentioned in the 144,000 Jewish Witnesses. Biblical Scholars have suggested:
An additional point is these 144,000 have a mark on them. This author's theory, which I haven't seen anywhere else, is probably similar to what Cain had that protected him from harm and also reminded Cain that he was still loved by God where Cain could exercise Faith because of the mark, which is a "type" of being "sealed".
* There is and have been a few religious groups that deny and claim many things that are contradictory to the Scriptures. One of the groups claim that initially all of their members were part of the 144,000 which included men, women, children, married people and definitely not virgins if they were married with children. This group had no proof of Jewish Tribal Lineage and also could not prove they were there to oppose the Antichrist in the last three and half years of the Tribulation Period.
The world will be cleansed of the evil people and nations at the end of the Tribulation Period. Jesus Christ will sit on the throne of King David in Jerusalem and will rule for 1000 years, which is known as the Millennial Kingdom. Everyone that survives the Tribulation Period and has Jesus Christ as their Savior, will enter into the Millennial Kingdom and will repopulate the Earth.
