Introduction

There are a variety of debates amongst good Biblical Scholars regarding the days of creation.  One of the most commonly heard debates is dealing with the day being an approximate 24-hour period or something else.  The questions and theories coming out of the 24-hour period debate is because God is providing the light on the Earth before Day 4.

There are a few Biblical Scholars that believe Day 1, 2 and 3 could have been periods of time that would equate to a modern-day period of thousands to millions of years.  There are problems with any theory of any period of time that is not near or equivalent to a 24-hour period.

There have been some commentaries that discuss Rabbinical writing which state the terms in the Hebrew dealing with morning and evening along with the source of light, that make up the days, are not very clear to being definable in Genesis 1:3-13.  This comes from the definition of the day starting with darkness and then ending with light as discussed in the topic on a Biblical Day.   The Hebrew words used in Genesis Chapter 1, concerning a day, do not give us enough of a starting and ending part of the day, other than God calling the accomplishment of activities as a specific day.  This author believes the days were equivalent to a 24-hour period of time, which is discussed further in this topic in the "Biblical Scholars Theories" section.

The table of events, shown here, reflect the specific summary of the Creation Events.  God does not give us precise details, and only the summary details.  There are a few important points that Genesis 1:1-2 give us that are discussed in further details, in the Gap Theory topic, which are relevant to know:

Table of Events

Scripture Reference Notes and what occurred
Genesis 1:1 Kingdom of God consisted of Heaven and Earth.  There was no Universe.   Heaven consists of more than a thrown room, and according to inferences, the Heaven is immense.  Non-believing scientist are coming up with theories that our universe may be a subset of a larger reality.
Genesis 1:2 The Earth was covered in a deep foreboding body of water.  God begins a new creation of the Earth and much more.

Day   What Occurred
1 Genesis 1:3-5 A undefined type of light was created to separate period of darkness and non-darkness.  It is not until Day 4 that the Sun, Moon and Stars are created.  The unknown source of light may sound mysterious, but we are not given the details, other than the light had to be from God.  Also, this indicates the Earth was spinning and had an orbit.
2 Genesis 1:6-8 Water was separated from a solid area, firmament, and also water was placed into the sky as a vaulted barrier surrounding the Earth.  The water vapors in the air, as we know, gives many benefits besides rain where it also acts as shield that blocks a great deal of cosmic radiation that is one of many problems for humans in Space Travel.  It was necessary for life to exist that God was about to create.
3 Genesis 1:6-13 There were land areas and water areas created.  On the land there was a creation of grass, trees, fruit trees, and a variety of vegetation that also could bear seeds.
4 Genesis 1:14-19 Sun and Moon created where the Earth was put into orbit around the Sun, and the Moon in an orbit around the Earth to create boundaries for years, days and seasons.  Also Stars, their constellations and other objects in the 2nd Heaven (universe) were created with their progressions to be for signs, which also includes the asteroids.
5 Genesis 1:20-23 All creatures that live in the oceans, lakes and rivers created.  All creatures that fly created.
6 Genesis 1:24-31 All creatures that walk and live on land created.  Man and woman are created in God's Image.
7 Genesis 2:1-3 God rested from creation, which means no additional creation was needed.

Scripture References to the Table

Genesis 1:1-2 1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2 And the earth was waste and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep: and the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.
Note: See topic on the Gap Theory for more information on Genesis 1:1-2
Day 1
Genesis 1:3-5
(Blessed Day)
God supplies His Light to illuminate the work He is doing.
3 And God said, Let there be light: and there was light. 4 And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness. 5 And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, one day.
Day 2
Genesis 1:6-8
(No Blessing)
6 And God said, Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters. 7 And God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament: and it was so. 8 And God called the firmament Heaven. And there was evening and there was morning, a second day.
Day 3
Genesis 1:9-13
(Double Blessing)
9 And God said, Let the waters under the heavens be gathered together unto one place, and let the dry land appear: and it was so. 10 And God called the dry land Earth; and the gathering together of the waters called he Seas: and God saw that it was good. 11 And God said, Let the earth put forth grass, herbs yielding seed, [and] fruit-trees bearing fruit after their kind, wherein is the seed thereof, upon the earth: and it was so. 12 And the earth brought forth grass, herbs yielding seed after their kind, and trees bearing fruit, wherein is the seed thereof, after their kind: and God saw that it was good. 13 And there was evening and there was morning, a third day.
Day 4
Genesis 14-19
(Blessed Day)

God no longer supplies His Light for day time.

14 And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days and years: 15 and let them be for lights in the firmament of heaven to give light upon the earth: and it was so. 16 And God made the two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: [he made] the stars also. 17 And God set them in the firmament of heaven to give light upon the earth,

18 and to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness: and God saw that it was good. 19 And there was evening and there was morning, a fourth day.

Day 5
Genesis 1:20-23
(Blessed Day)

(a) All creatures that live in the oceans, lakes, rivers created
(b) Flying creatures created
20 And God said, Let the waters swarm with swarms of living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth in the open firmament of heaven. 21 And God created the great sea-monsters, and every living creature that moveth, wherewith the waters swarmed, after their kind, and every winged bird after its kind: and God saw that it was good.

22 And God blessed them, saying, Be fruitful, and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let birds multiply on the earth.

23 And there was evening and there was morning, a fifth day.

Day 6
Genesis 1:24-31
(Blessed Day)

(a) All land animals created.
(b) Man created first.
(c) Woman created second.

24 And God said, Let the earth bring forth living creatures after their kind, cattle, and creeping things, and beasts of the earth after their kind: and it was so. 25 And God made the beasts of the earth after their kind, and the cattle after their kind, and everything that creepeth upon the ground after its kind: and God saw that it was good. 26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the heavens, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. 27 And God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them. 28 And God blessed them: and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it; and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the heavens, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth. 29 And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb yielding seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for food: 30 and to every beast of the earth, and to every bird of the heavens, and to everything that creepeth upon the earth, wherein there is life, [I have given] every green herb for food: and it was so. 31 And God saw everything that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day.

Creation Finished

Day 7
Genesis 2:1-3
(Blessed Day)

God rested, which means ceased creation work.
1 And the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them. 2 And on the seventh day God finished his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made. 3 And God blessed the seventh day, and hallowed it; because that in it he rested from all his work which God had created and made.

Biblical Scholars Theories

As mentioned at the start of this topic, there are debates amongst many Biblical Scholars on how long the days were in the first six days of Genesis 1:3-31.  This is because God was providing His Light until Day 4, which then then has caused the following theories:

A few Biblical Scholars have stated that the problem with interpreting the day period being anything other than a 24-hour period is Exodus 8-11, which is the scriptures dealing with the Ten Commandments, where God states that six-days of Creation were Days.  God does not state they were periods of time that were given an analogy of a day.

Exodus 20:8-11 8 “Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. 9 Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is a sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your male or female servant, nor your animals, nor any foreigner residing in your towns. 11 For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.

Why did it take Six Days?

Occasionally, there seems to be the question asked rhetorically against the belief in God on why did it take six days?  It is the opinion of this author the answer should be very selectively answered as to not ridicule the Integrity and Glory of God.

The answers are possibly:

  1. To prove that after every day's new creation, Lucifer could not do anything to stop or create anything of Lucifer's own, while the events were happening on Earth, with God doing the Creation.  Note that eventually, Lucifer did have the ability to taint, pervert and destroy something in the Garden of Eden that was already in existence, which was the tree containing the Forbidden Fruit.  See the topic on "Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil" for more information.
  2. For the Angels to enjoy the process as read in Job 38:4-7.
  3. To show God's Power for the Glory which He was sharing with the Angels that loved and trusted Him.
  4. To eventually reveal the ultimate creation of men and women, where Lucifer recognized Adam and Eve as the Fallen Angel's replacement and something more greater.  Unbeknownst to Lucifer, was how God had the plan before the foundation of the Earth to ultimately show how much God love is provable and knowable.  This is often called the "Purpose of All History".
Job 38:4-7
God speaking to Job
4 “Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth? Tell Me, if you have understanding, 5 Who set its measurements? Since you know. Or who stretched the line on it? 6 “On what were its bases sunk? Or who laid its cornerstone,
7 When the morning stars (Angels) sang together And all the sons of God shouted for joy?

Concluding Remarks

This author believes that the preponderance of information from the scriptures, by letting the scriptures interpret the scriptures, indicate that God's Day is approximately 24 hours, but not precisely.  The topic on a Biblical Day lists the scriptures that show how God defined a day:

The current usage of days in our modern-world is midnight to midnight.  In the Biblical definition, it can be analogously thought of as 6pm until 5:59pm.

From science, we know that the day is not exactly a 24-hour period.  An article on UniverseToday.com, has the day is defined as 23 hours, 56 minutes and 4.0916 seconds.  This absolutely does not contradict the scriptures as God never set a time-span definition, because God used the event of darkness and light.  Additionally, there were affects to the scientific day and years after the Long Day of Joshua event in history from the scriptures.
