Preface

Christmas is the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ where the name is taken from the pairing of Christ and the Catholic Mass, which does not mean participating in Christmas means a person is taking part a Roman Catholic Mass when celebrating Christmas.  There have been many different Christmas traditions started, stopped and continued depending upon what location a person is in the world, which celebrate the day with Christian,  non-Christian, atheistic or agnostic beliefs.

In different places in the world, the birth of Jesus Christ is primarily celebrated on December 25th or January 7th:

  1. December 25th is the selected day for the Julian Calendar for most of the Western World.
  2. January 7th is the selected day for the Gregorian Calendar for the Russian Orthodox and other Orthodox Christian faiths.

There are a few Christian Faiths and even Christians who have negative opinions concerning the celebration of Christmas and whether it should be celebrated.  There are also those who believe that some of the traditions of Christmas are pagan and should not be part of the event.

This author believes that from the Christian perspective there is absolutely nothing wrong with having:

There is a greater story of the Birth of our Savior, with the event of a specific group of Magi who came to visit the birth time of Jesus Christ.    The real story of the real “wise men”, who were not kings, will reinforce your Faith in our Savior Jesus Christ.

The Magi were visitors from the Parthian Empire to the east of Israel and they were members of a religious group called Magian.  The group of Magian Priest that came to Jerusalem were part of a cabal set up and prepared several hundreds of years before the birth of Jesus Christ by Daniel the Prophet.  When the Magian group came to Jerusalem, they were escorted by a substantial military presence for protection which is why King Herod was afraid and also gave them audience.

How the Day was Selected that Jesus Christ was Born

The scriptures do not give us the day that Jesus Christ had His earthly birth (from being the Son of God in Eternity), but from scriptural references a particular month range can be theoretically proposed (discussed later in this topic), where the current selected day in different parts of the world can be proven to be incorrect.  Therefore the question is how was the day selection initially done and how did it change in some places?

There are two interesting scriptural passages in Genesis and Jeremiah that deal indirectly with part of the process of how the day of Jesus Christ's birth was later in history selected as December 25th.  The first scriptural passage of Genesis 10:8-10 deal with Nimrod, who in the scriptures is described as the first World Dictator, and also in secular sources.  The second scriptural passage of Jeremiah 10:1-25, deal with a false worship involving trees that is very similar to the modern-day Christmas Tree

After Nimrod's death, there were traditions started in remembrance and worship of Nimrod that Biblical Scholars state absorbed later in the worship of the Roman deity of Saturn.  After the acceptance and prominence of the Christian religion in the Roman Empire, the traditions and dates dealing with Saturn Worship were eliminated or replaced with Christian Celebrations that included a celebration of Jesus Christ's birth.

Genesis 10:8-10 8 Now Cush became the father of Nimrod; he became a mighty one on the earth. 9 He was a mighty hunter before the LORD; therefore it is said, "Like Nimrod a mighty hunter before the LORD." 10 The beginning of his kingdom was Babel and Erech and Accad and Calneh, in the land of Shinar.
Notes:
a.  He was a hunter of men, which means a type of warlord in our current vernacular way of speaking.
b. The city of Babel becomes Babylon.
Jeremiah 10:1-25
(Christmas tree tradition origin?  This does NOT mean to not have a Christmas tree!)
Hear the word that the Lord speaks to you, O house of Israel. Thus says the Lord: “Learn not the way of the nations, nor be dismayed at the signs of the heavens because the nations are dismayed at them, for the customs of the peoples are vanity. A tree from the forest is cut down and worked with an axe by the hands of a craftsman. They decorate it with silver and gold; they fasten it with hammer and nails so that it cannot move. Their idols are like scarecrows in a cucumber field, and they cannot speak; they have to be carried, for they cannot walk. Do not be afraid of them, for they cannot do evil, neither is it in them to do good.” ...

The Matthew 2:11 scripture has been used as one of the primary reasons for gift-giving on the celebration day of the birth of Jesus Christ, but gift-giving was also part of the previous different pagan worship days for both worship of Nimrod and Saturn.  Some Historians state when people in different countries are conquered, the celebrations are often absorbed by the conquering country.

Matthew 2:11
Magi give Gifts to the infant Jesus Christ
And going into the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother, and they fell down and worshiped him. Then, opening their treasures, they offered him gifts, gold and frankincense and myrrh.

The following points outline, with some details, the process on how the birthday selection for Jesus Christ was adobted along with some other interesting details:

  1. Historically Nimrod's birthday was celebrated on the equivalent day on our calendar of December 25th, which was later changed for a celebration in Saturn Worship by the Romans.  At a later point in the history of the Roman Empire, when Christianity was becoming a more recognized religion in the Roman Empire and then later the established religion of the Roman Empire the dates dealing with Saturn worship had to be eliminated.  The pagan priests, when becoming Christians, replaced / reframed the Saturn worship event day with a celebration of Jesus Christ's birth around the time of 336 AD.  This helped in the economic commerce which dealt with gifts, meals and travel that guaranteed continuance.
  2. Some historians theorize that the pagan priests, before the event was converted into the Saturn worship day and then into Christian Faith's Jesus Christ birthday, used a myth which Nimrod's wife stated that after Nimrod's death, that Nimrod was now a spirit being.  On every December 25th, Nimrod's spirit would show his presence by having a dead tree stump become a beautiful evergreen tree during the evening while people slept.  When people awoke in the morning the tree would have gifts around it.
    (a) Nimrod's wife Semiramis claimed that Nimrod was the sun-god or like the sun-god.
    (b) Semiramis claimed to also be Nimrod's mother besides Nimrod's wife.
  3. Note the New Testament does not give us a definitive date on what day Jesus Christ was born.  This author believes it is somewhat related to the idea of why the scriptures do not give us a detailed description of what Jesus Christ looked like during His first mission as the Messiah.  If we had an exact day in the scriptures, then it would somehow be misused and abused even more than it is now.
  4. The Star of Bethlehem has many conjectures that are based on planets and stars lining up.  Some Biblical Scholar contend the star was actually an Angel lighting up the sky that led specifically in Bethlehem.  This author leans toward it first being a celestial object then an Angel shining down on the birth location of Jesus Christ.  More on this later in this topic.
  5. If we had to guess, some Biblical Scholars state that Jesus Christ most likely was born in the spring or summer to explain the shepherds with flocks of sheep in the hills at night, which they would most likely the shepherds would never do in the dead of winter time because of the cold and rains.
    (a) The shepherds had the ritual custom of tending their flocks from early spring to beginning of the Fall season in the hills where they would spend the nights watching over them for protection.  At some point in the Fall period the rains and cold weather began which stopped the shepherds being out with the herds.  Luke 2:8, Ezra 10:9-13 and Song of Solomon 2:11 collaborate this point.
    (b) In Ezra 10:9, the ninth month is the month of Chisleu (Kislev) which is in the November to December time period.
    Luke 2:4-8

Birth of Jesus and shepherds keeping watch over sheep by night.
4 And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and family of David; 5 to enroll himself with Mary, who was betrothed to him, being great with child. 6 And it came to pass, while they were there, the days were fulfilled that she should be delivered. 7 And she brought forth her firstborn son; and she wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn. 8 And there were shepherds in the same country abiding in the field, and keeping watch by night over their flock.
Ezra 10:9-13 9 So all the men of Judah and Benjamin assembled at Jerusalem within the three days. It was the ninth month on the twentieth of the month, and all the people sat in the open square before the house of God, trembling because of this matter and the heavy rain. 10 Then Ezra the priest stood up and said to them, “You have been unfaithful and have married foreign wives adding to the guilt of Israel. 11 “Now therefore, make confession to the LORD God of your fathers and do His will; and separate yourselves from the peoples of the land and from the foreign wives.” 12 Then all the assembly replied with a loud voice, “That’s right! As you have said, so it is our duty to do. 13 “But there are many people; it is the rainy season and we are not able to stand in the open. Nor can the task be done in one or two days, for we have transgressed greatly in this matter.
Song of Solomon 2:11 For behold, the winter is past, The rain is over and gone.
    (c) Note that there are some Biblical research websites that believe that Jesus Christ was born in the late summer, and most likely October.

The eventual acceptance of Christmas Trees with gifts, in many Biblical Scholars opinions, seems to have been adopted from the pagan practices from Nimrod, Saturnalia and the gifts that the Magi gave the baby Jesus Christ.  There are secular historical documentation that state Christmas Tree acceptance started as a tradition around the year period of the 1600s.  The interesting point to recognize is the idea of a tree most likely came from the historical pagan practices told by word of mouth throughout the centuries, where Christians thought a tree (not worship of Nimrod) would be a nice ornamental object used in the celebration pointing to Jesus Christ' birthday.

It is worthy of speculation that the primary choice of replacing the Roman Empires' god of Saturn festival, which was a time of gift giving, with Jesus Christ's birthday is the main reason for the date choice.  The question to rhetorically ask ourselves, is how did the god of Saturn's festival period and days just so coincidentally coincides with Nimrod's birthday, if there was not some satanic spiritual force behind it?  As Christians, we would have to understand that this is actually very insulting, against God's Holly Name and the everything God Is, which a fake god of Saturn is not.

This author is NOT stating we should not celebrate Jesus Christ's Birth on December 25th, January 7th or not to have a Christmas Tree with gifts.  The original intent has long been forgotten, and we know that God judges us righteously where the true intent for Christians on Christmas is to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ regardless of the world's opposite views.

Three Magi or Three Kings?

In popular songs surrounding Christmas there is the notion that there were three Kings bringing gifts to the newly born baby Jesus Christ on December 25th. This tradition is the Western and Roman Catholic influenced tradition that has been adopted by most Christian Denominations.

In the Orthodox influenced Christian Faiths, there is the tradition of 3 Magi visiting the newly born Jesus after the birth on December 25th or January 7th.  There are even some old Christian Traditions, no longer heard much, that have the number of kings or Magi were mostly men and some women that may have numbered 12, which matches the number of Apostles.

The Russian Orthodox Denomination, identifies the wise men as bringing gifts but do not identify them necessarily as numbering three or as kings.  The stories in the Russian Orthodox Faith, do bring in some of the traditions of the Western Roman Catholic traditions that possibly have been integrated over the last few centuries.

Matthew 2:1 Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, magi from the east arrived in Jerusalem, saying,
Matthew 2:11
Magi give Gifts to the infant Jesus Christ
And going into the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother, and they fell down and worshiped him. Then, opening their treasures, they offered him gifts, gold and frankincense and myrrh.

Note 1: Gift of gold was for recognizing His Divinity.  Frankincense was for burning to create a beautiful fragrance that was used also in Temple worship that would also point to His Divinity.  Myrrh was for recognizing Jesus Christ future role in death for the payment of sins of the world for those who would accept Him as their Savior.  Myrrh was the primary ingredient used in burials for preparation of the body.
Note 2: In the 1000 Millennial Kingdom, there will be gifts given to Jesus Christ of gold and frankincense, but no myrrh because the death was already accomplished.  See Isaiah 60:6

The origins of the number of Kings are not known according to Biblical Scholars, but there is a history of when the myths were added.  Here are a few for the Three Kings:

  1. Possible first mention is in the 3rd Century by Origen on Alexandria, who was a Christian writer and introduced:
    (a) The wise men, Magi, were really kings.
    (b) Note that actually the Magi were priests of a religion in the Parthian Empire and not kings.  More on this further in this topic.
  2. Possibly, the most logical explanation by researchers, on why three Magi or Kings was accepted because of the three gifts given: Gold, Frankincense and Myrrh.  The myth of three kings probably started with the belief that it has to be three persons who each give one gift.
  3. The naming of the Three Kings was first possibly identified in the writing named "Pontificatis Ecclesiae Ravennatis", which is inferred to mean "The Papal Church Places and Names", by Andreas Agnellus
    (a) Three Kings suddenly have names:
First is Gaspar, Casper or Gathaspa
Second is Balthazar, Bithisarea or Balthasar
Third is Mechior, Melchior or Melichoir
    (b) The Three Kings suddenly are different ages to supposedly have God representing youth, maturity and old age.
  4. There are supposed bones and relics that were found in the Fourth Century which the Roman Emperor Frederick Barbarossa kept in Milan, that were attributed to the Three Kings who visited the Baby Jesus Christ.
(From the article on Wikipedia.org: the Shrine of the Three Kings is located in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany at the Catholic Cologne Cathedral.)
Excerpt from the Shrine of the Three Kings:

The "relics of the Magi" were originally situated at Constantinople, but brought to Milan in an oxcart by Eustorgius I, the city's bishop, to whom they were entrusted by the Emperor Constantine in 314. [6] Eight centuries later in 1164, Holy Roman Emperor Frederick Barbarossa took the relics of the Magi from the church of Saint Eustorgio in Milan and gave them to the Archbishop of Cologne, Rainald of Dassel.[7] The Three Kings have since attracted a constant stream of pilgrims to Cologne.
    ...
On July 20, 1864, the shrine was opened, revealing human remains and the coins of Philip I, Archbishop of Cologne. An eyewitness report reads:

"In a special compartment of the shrine now there showed - along with remains of ancient old rotten or moulded bandages, most likely byssus, besides pieces of aromatic resins and similar substances - numerous bones of three persons, which under the guidance of several present experts could be assembled into nearly complete bodies: the one in his early youth, the second in his early manhood, the third was rather aged. Two coins, bracteates made of silver and only one side stricken, were adjoined; one, probably from the days of Philipps von Heinsberg, displayed a church (See Note), the other showed a cross, accompanied by the sword of jurisdiction, and the crosier (bishop's crook) on either side."[11]
  5. At some point in the middle-ages, the Three Kings are represented as men of different ethnicities.
  6. In the Fourteen Century the Armenian tradition started that:
Gaspar was the King of India
Balthazar was the King of Arabia, and
Mechior was the King of Persia.

There is a place that is very special to God, and the place is Holy of Holies in the Temple in the Old Testament, which contained an Alter, Mercy-Seat, tablets, Aaron's staff and foundation stone.  There is also a future Temple, which will also have the Holy of Holies in it, which will be in existence during the Tribulation Period.  The Holy of Hollies was was never meant to be worshiped, but a place built for the worship of God.

Leviticus 16:2-4 2 and Jehovah said unto Moses, Speak unto Aaron thy brother, that he come not at all times into the holy place within the veil, before the mercy-seat which is upon the ark; that he die not: for I will appear in the cloud upon the mercy-seat. Herewith shall Aaron come into the holy place: with a young bullock for a sin-offering, and a ram for a burnt-offering. He shall put on the holy linen coat, and he shall have the linen breeches upon his flesh, and shall be girded with the linen girdle, and with the linen mitre shall he be attired: they are the holy garments; and he shall bathe his flesh in water, and put them on.
Leviticus 16:12-13 12 And he shall take a censer full of coals of fire from off the altar before Jehovah, and his hands full of sweet incense beaten small, and bring it within the veil: 13 and he shall put the incense upon the fire before Jehovah, that the cloud of the incense may cover the mercy-seat that is upon the testimony, that he die not:

This author absolutely believes in the paramount benefits of being in special places, churches and even a fellowship to aid in bringing ourselves:

The rhetorical question to always ask ourselves is there anything that is man-made that should become an object of prayer, adoration, reverence or even worship?  When anything, that is man-made, becomes an object of prayer this violates God's law.

Leviticus 26:1 "Do not make idols or set up an image or a sacred stone for yourselves, and do not place a carved stone in your land to bow down before it. I am the LORD your God",
Exodus 20:4 "You shall not make for yourself an idol, or any likeness of what is in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the water under the earth"
Deuteronomy 4:28
Warning what happens
There you will serve gods, the work of man's hands, wood and stone, which neither see nor hear nor eat nor smell.
Acts 17:29 Being then God’s offspring, we ought not to think that the divine being is like gold or silver or stone, an image formed by the art and imagination of man.

There are important reasons for the scriptures not giving us a description of what Jesus Christ looked like such as skin or hair color, height or even muscular build because of the potential of having someone try to look Jesus Christ.  Amongst several reasons, this author has the additional theory that is what the Antichrist will do in the Tribulation Period where he will try to look like Jesus Christ to be more acceptable and to receive worship.

Has the Shrine of the Three Kings taken on a role of a Holy Place of God?  In 2 Kings 18:4, there is a good King of Israel, named Hezekiah who had to destroy the Bronze Serpent made in Number 21:6-9, because people began to worship the Bronze Serpent.

Numbers 21:6-9 6 Then the Lord sent venomous snakes among them; they bit the people and many Israelites died. 7 The people came to Moses and said, “We sinned when we spoke against the Lord and against you. Pray that the Lord will take the snakes away from us.” So Moses prayed for the people. 8 The Lord said to Moses, “Make a snake and put it up on a pole; anyone who is bitten can look at it and live. 9 So Moses made a bronze snake and put it up on a pole. Then when anyone was bitten by a snake and looked at the bronze snake, they lived.
2 Kings 18:4 He removed the high places and broke down the sacred pillars and cut down the Asherah. He also broke in pieces the bronze serpent that Moses had made, for until those days the sons of Israel burned incense to it; and it was called Nehushtan.

Note that from the positive perspective, the Bronze Serpent was a pointer to Jesus Christ, just as any special place like the Shrine of the Three Kings should be for us, but not a place to venerate old bones of unverifiable people along with the coins of the Roman Empire.  Even if the bones are of the Magi, that does not make us become closer to God.  John 3:14 informs us the double purpose of the Bronze Serpent.

John 3:14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up

The Magian Religion

The Magi Religion was the predominant and most powerful religious system in ancient Babylon Empire and the Median Persia Empire.  Persia is modern-day Iran.

Excerpted parts are from the Magi Religion topic:

The Magi first were recognized in history around the 7th or 6th century BC as a tribe in Persia.  The tribe selected specific men to start a priesthood that practiced what we call today as occult practices that involved necromancy, albeit worship of only one god.  The religion may have had Scythian origins.  The Magian Priests wore white robes and hats that were pointed with side flaps.

The predominate beliefs of the Magians had:

  • No images of gods.
  • Believed in a one god.
  • Temples contained no monuments or shrines, just a sacred fire.
  • Believed in the destruction of what they deemed to be unclean forms of life, such as reptiles and insects.
  • Held a high reverence for cleanliness in elements of their dress and buildings.
  • Disposed of the deceased priests and others by place the body in an area for birds to eat, or the body was covered in wax then buried in a tomb or ground.
  • Had many similar elements in common with the Jews.

In the Book of Daniel, the Prophet Daniel was taken into captivity from Jerusalem into service in the conquering empire of Babylon where Daniel began his service and eventually rose to be second in power under King Nebuchadnezzar, and also set as the leader of the Magian Priest in Babylon after the interpretation of the King Nebuchadnezzar's first dream.  When the Babylonian Empire was conquered by the Persian Empire with only a small battle within the city, as written about in Daniel chapter 5, the Prophet Daniel once again rose in the administration of the Persian Kingdom under the ruler King Darius and eventually under King Cyrus.

Note that some Historians believe there is a possibility that King Darius and King Cyrus may have been the same man as the custom at that time was for kings to take on multiple names.  After reviewing several accounts of historical references, this author believes this is not the case but rather Darius, a title name, was King Cyrus's highest-ranking commander in charge of the military who was rewarded with an equivalence of kingship over the conquered Babylon.

The conquering of the city of Babylon according to historians and Isaiah 44:27-28, was done by diverting a river defense moat system, surrounding the city of Babylon which allowed the Persian soldiers to enter Babylon underneath multiple previously submerged water gates without being detected before engaging in a quick battle within the city walls.  At this time, King Nebuchadnezzar was deceased and Daniel was in retirement around the age of 62.  Daniel was called upon by the second in command of Babylon, to give an interpretation of the famous "handwriting on the wall incident" of Daniel 5:5-forward.  The current King Nabonidus who was not there but his son King Belshazzar was there as second in charge.  King Belshazzar offered Daniel the third place in the kingdom for interpretation of the writing on the wall, which Daniel declined and gave Belshazzar the prediction of his demise and also Babylon's.

At the time when Babylon was conquered and King Cyrus entered Babylon, the scriptural history along with collaboration from the writings of Josephus, indicate the Magian Priests let King Cyrus know about the Hand Writing on the Wall Incident.  Also, Daniel let King Cyrus know about the prophecy in Isaiah 44:27-28 which has King Cyrus's name written in it from 150 years before the event.  This of course showed King Cyrus who the true God was but it also shows us that Daniel was a reader of the prophecies where he knew what was going to happen.

As noted in Josephus's writing, Daniel was greatly honored and brought to back to Media with King Cyrus as collaboration of events concerning Daniel's position in the Magian System and his value.

Josephus, Antiquities, XL I 2

(text from English translation.  Baltazar is Greek for the equivalent of Belchazzar in Hebrew.
"Now, after a little while, both himself and the city were taken by Cyrus, the king of Persia, who fought against him; for it was Baltasar, under whom Babylon was taken, when he had reigned seventeen years. And this is the end of the posterity of king Nebuchadnezzar, as history informs us; but when Babylon was taken by Darius, and when he, with his kinsman Cyrus, had put an end to the dominion of the Babylonians, he was sixty-two years old. He was the son of Astyages, and had another name among the Greeks. Moreover, he took Daniel the prophet, and carried him with him into Media, and honored him very greatly, and kept him with him; for he was one of the three presidents whom he set over his three hundred and sixty provinces, for into so many did Darius part them. "
Isaiah 44:27-28 27 "It is I who says to the depth of the sea, 'Be dried up!' And I will make your rivers dry. 28 "It is I who says of Cyrus, 'He is My shepherd! And he will perform all My desire.' And he declares of Jerusalem, 'She will be built,' And of the temple, 'Your foundation will be laid.'"
Isaiah 45:1-6 1 Thus says the LORD to Cyrus His anointed, Whom I have taken by the right hand, To subdue nations before him And to loose the loins of kings; To open doors before him so that gates will not be shut: 2 "I will go before you and make the rough places smooth; I will shatter the doors of bronze and cut through their iron bars. 3 "I will give you the treasures of darkness And hidden wealth of secret places, So that you may know that it is I, The LORD, the God of Israel, who calls you by your name. 4 "For the sake of Jacob My servant, And Israel My chosen one, I have also called you by your name; I have given you a title of honor Though you have not known Me. 5 "I am the LORD, and there is no other; Besides Me there is no God. I will gird you, though you have not known Me; 6 That men may know from the rising to the setting of the sun That there is no one besides Me. I am the LORD, and there is no other,

transcript from C. Missler notes.
“...without any battle, he entered the town, sparing any calamity; ... I returned to sacred cities on the other side of the Tigris, the sanctuaries of which have been ruins for a long time... and established for them permanent sanctuaries. I also gathered all their former inhabitants and returned to them their habitations.”

Daniel upon arrival in Persia, once again rose in power, and he was put in charge with two other Satraps mentioned in (Daniel 6:1-2), which Daniel held the highest position of the three.  The Magian-Persian priests were in charge of many things which included:

of Persia.  Many historians, and the scriptures, state that Daniel became part of the Priesthood in a leading administration role, where he always still kept his allegiance to the God of the Scriptures, not the Magian deity.  This was proven in the Lion's den event, recorded in the scriptures.

As before in Babylon, there were events in Daniel's life and Daniel's Hebrew friends, which resulted in attempts on their lives in Persia.  In Persia, the most widely known scriptural event is the Lion's den, which Daniel's two co-leaders of the Magian Priests conspired to get Daniel killed.  After the Lion's Den event in Daniel 6, Daniel became the sole leader because the other two co-leaders were executed after trying to set up a false accusation to get Daniel killed.  In Daniel 6:24, the men with their families were executed by the lions in the place which they tried to get Daniel executed which was the Lion's den.

Historians also believe this Lion's Den event most likely solidified Daniels place in charge of the Median-Persia priesthood, but there is no specific documentation on this aspect.  Note that this author believes this is the case and also believes that the preponderance of scriptural and other external writing indicate that everyone knew of Daniel's belief in the true God albeit there was unfortunately the inability to eliminate the false gods and false worship.

Daniel 6:1-2 1 It seemed good to Darius to appoint 120 satraps over the kingdom, that they would be in charge of the whole kingdom, 2 and over them three commissioners (of whom Daniel was one), that these satraps might be accountable to them, and that the king might not suffer loss.
Daniel 6:24 The king then gave orders, and they brought those men who had maliciously accused Daniel, and they cast them, their children and their wives into the lions' den; and they had not reached the bottom of the den before the lions overpowered them and crushed all their bones.
Daniel 6:28 So this Daniel enjoyed success in the reign of Darius and in the reign of Cyrus the Persian.

Parthian Empire

At the time of the Birth of Jesus Christ, there were two formable empires that were next to one another where the area in-between them, that included Israel, had skirmishes, raids and battles to take over more territory.  Both empires often claimed the area of Israel as part of their empire, and it was almost considered a modern-day sort of “buffer-zone”.

The Parthian Empire was made up of the former Median Persia Empire along with the areas of primarily one of Alexander's the Great's successors named Seleucid.  There was another empire at that time, with the Greek name of the Scythians, which remained the Parthian Empires secondary opponent north of them.  The Scythians had the same military tactics of horseback cavalry with a defense-in-depth approach that would weaken and debilitate enemy's logistic abilities to fight by utilizing great distances for their enemies detriment.  The Greek historian, called the father of history, named Herodotus had a great deal of writing concerning the Greco-Persian wars with the strategies of the battles of the time that spoke about the Scythian methods.

The Roman army, on foot, was far more formidable and lethal than most armies where this advantage against the Parthian military was rendered almost useless, in some battles, because of the Parthian war tactics.  The Parthian military used mostly archers on horseback in their military campaigns, who would almost never engage the enemy in close quarters. The Parthians would ride up close to their opponents, shoot arrows, appear to retreat, which would draw the opposition without a shield wall or defense in numbers, where the Parthian archers riding backwards would shoot arrows.  Historians state that the Parthian, and also the Scythian warriors, had the ability to shoot arrows from either left or right-handed with deadly accuracy which has never been unequaled in history.  (See this modern-day link on archery skills, and this video on Lars demonstrating the possibilities of ancient warriors who used the bow and arrow as their main tactical weapon in every position and movement!)

Daniel the Prophet

In the Book of Daniel, we learn about the remarkable life and career of Daniel who rose to power in both the Babylonian Empire under Nebuchadnezzar and also the Median Persia under King Cyrus. There can be volumes of information that can be written about Daniel, but for the purpose of this topic, we will focus on Daniel's role in both kingdoms as head of the religious systems of that day.

As noted earlier in this topic, the Median Religion was remarkably similar to Judaism albeit not recognizing the God of the Bible, which is important in the possibility of how Daniel was more easily accepted in the two kingdoms, and also for what Daniel appears to have set in a long-range plan for a future role of the Magi in Jesus Christ Birth.

It should be mentioned that Daniel's role for the two kingdoms can be equivalently described as an executive in our corporate world, where he acted as Chief Executive Officer for the owner who was the King.  It is this author's opinion that Daniel's inspiration through God made Daniel exemplary, fair and wise in position where Daniel did not abuse the power given to him.

Besides the attributes described above in this topic, the Magi involved themselves as cataloguers of dreams and the dream interpreting, Oneiromancy.  They advised Kings and others on matters of dreams and made prophetic predictions.  During Daniel's life, according to the scriptures, Daniel was much loved and honored (respected) by King Nebuchadnezzar and later by King Cyrus because of his ability to interpret dreams, where the ability was from God, which both Kings recognized the source as God.

There are many Biblical Scholars who believe Nebuchadnezzar came to believe in God and received Salvation through the Faith gained by the works of Daniel.  According to Josephus's writings, Daniel came into his position in Persian Empire around the age of 62 years old.

Daniel 2:48 "Then the king gave Daniel high honors and many great gifts, and made him ruler over the whole province of Babylon and chief prefect over all the wise men of Babylon."
The wise men were the religious
Daniel 5:11 "There is a man in your kingdom in whom is a spirit of the holy gods; and in the days of your father, illumination, insight and wisdom like the wisdom of the gods were found in him. And King Nebuchadnezzar, your father, your father the king, appointed him chief of the magicians, conjurers, Chaldeans and diviners."

When the Persians invaded and conquered Babylon, with only a small battle inside the city walls by invading under a lowered river defensive moat system, Daniel ended up becoming in charge over the priesthood of the Magi in the kingdom of Persia as inferred by the scriptures and other historical writings.  Daniel additionally became a prince, and leader, in the Persian empire that included many other responsibilities besides the Magian areas.

Note that the Magian Priests could be considered part of a modern-day Governmental Parliament or type-of Congress, which had power and prestige with military protection and authority.

Daniel 6:1-3 1 It pleased Darius to set over the kingdom 120 satraps, to be throughout the whole kingdom; 2 and over them three high officials, of whom Daniel was one, to whom these satraps should give account, so that the king might suffer no loss. 3 Then this Daniel became distinguished above all the other high officials and satraps, because an excellent spirit was in him. And the king planned to set him over the whole kingdom.

Note that there are some discussions and disagreements on who Darius was in history outside of the Biblical Scriptures.  This author is mentioning these for the reader's exposure and knowledge.

Persians and Israel

Chapter 8 of Daniel outlines a prophecy in a vision dealing with a Ram and a Goat.  After the vision, Daniel is visited by the Angel Gabriel that is commanded to give Daniel details of the vision.  In verse 18 through 22, we learn of kingdom that will arise out of the current kingdom that Daniel lived, which is the Median Persia Empire.

There is some Christian Documentaries in books, magazines and on the internet, that state there was a period of 400 years which are often called the "Silent Years", because the period was between the Old Testament and New Testament period where there were no Prophets or Scriptural Book written.  The Roman Catholic Church recognizes the Apocrypha Books written during the "Silent Years", but most other Christian Faiths believe they are not inspired.  Regardless of the period of time, is God gave Daniel information in advance of four kingdoms to come that would be during that period of time.

There is a scriptural passage that describes the King of Persia is Daniel 8:18-22, which describes the ending of the Persian Empire by the King of Greece, which is relevant in the destiny of Magians that had places of authority in Persia and later in the succeeding empires:

Daniel 8:18-22 18 While he was speaking to me, I was in a deep sleep, with my face to the ground. Then he touched me and raised me to my feet. 19 He said: “I am going to tell you what will happen later in the time of wrath, because the vision concerns the appointed time of the end. 20 The two-horned ram that you saw represents the kings of Media and Persia. 21 The shaggy goat is the king of Greece, and the large horn between its eyes is the first king. 22 The four horns that replaced the one that was broken off represent four kingdoms that will emerge from his nation but will not have the same power.

    {more points are in the Alexander the Great topic including information from Josephus's book that describes the meeting between Alexander the Great and Daniel.}

The descriptions of the vision’s interpretations:

  1. Verse 20 points to the Median-Persian empire of Darius III.
  2. Verse 21 points to Alexander the Great as the king of Greece, who conquered the Achaemenid Persian empire of Darius III.
  3. The comparison of a the two-horned ram for the Median-Persian Empire meant that it was very strong, but the goat was very fast moving and very furious against the ram.
Daniel 8:5-8 5 As I was thinking about this, suddenly a goat with a prominent horn between its eyes came from the west, crossing the whole earth without touching the ground. 6 It came toward the two-horned ram I had seen standing beside the canal and charged at it in great rage. 7 I saw it attack the ram furiously, striking the ram and shattering its two horns. The ram was powerless to stand against it; the goat knocked it to the ground and trampled on it, and none could rescue the ram from its power. 8 The goat became very great, but at the height of its power the large horn was broken off, and in its place four prominent horns grew up toward the four winds of heaven.
  4. Verse 22 is referring to the period after Alexander the Great's death in 323 BC where his empire was split into four kingdoms.  The split took approximately 17 years to be divide up with the four of Alexander's generals and advisors:
King Role Area Known as Approximation Years
1 Cassander General Macedonia and Greece Macedon 305 BC to 297 BC
2 Lysimachus Trusted Body Guard and Officer Thrace, Bithyania and most of Asia Minor King of these areas 305 BC to 281 BC
3 Seleucus General Syra, Lands to the east towards India (Parts lost from 167 BC Forward) Seleucid Empire 312 BC to 63 BC
4 Ptolemy Friend, advisor and possibly a half older brother Egypt, Cyrene, Arabia Petracea and a few parts of Asia Minor Ptolemai Dynasty 305 BC to 30 BC

The primary empire to follow for Biblical prophecy is the Seleucid empire, which eventually was conquered by the Parthians.  The Seleucids empire contained Israel, Syria, Persia and other lands towards India, where the Persians and Hebrews suffered greatly under the Seleucid domination, which somewhat bonded the Jews with the Medes and Persians as liberator guardians at different points later when the Roman Empire invaded and subjugated Israel.  Israel saw it better to be under the Parthian Empire rather than the Roman Empire.

Note that there was a significant milestone in 167 BC, when Israel was under the Seleucid Empire.  Israel gained independence in the Maccabean Revolt which is recorded in 1 Maccabees, 2 Maccabees and “The Jewish War” by Flavius Josephus as a result of the Abomination of Desolation event.  For a short period, Israel came under rule by the Hasmonean Dynasty before the Hasmonean Dynasty fell to the Roman Empire.  From that point forward the area of Israel became the battle ground and buffer zone for the Roman Empire and Parthian Empire control of the region.

Here are some additional milestones dates detailing the area of Israel during the years leading up to the birth of Jesus Christ which showed the instability of the area of Jerusalem:  When reading the dates, remember this is BC so the years are descending.

Wise Men Coming from the East

At the time of Jesus Christ’s birth, the area of Jerusalem was back in Roman control under King Herod but it was an unstable rule.

** There is a myth which used the "Scepter Shall not Depart Judah" scriptural verse of Genesis 49:10 to somehow make the Sanhedrin marching around Jerusalem in sack cloth and ashes which never happened.  The policy of removing the right of Capital Punishment from the Sanhedrin was an import scriptural event that enabled the future Crucifixion that liberated all of us.  The Crucifixion was a perfectly accomplished event planned by God.

In the scripture, we learn about Wise Men from the East who show up in Jerusalem.  If they came from the East that meant they came from or out of the Parthian Empire.  There were no other empires, or other kingdoms, in the east besides the Parthian Empire that were within distance to travel to Israel, additionally any other empire that was farther east of the Parthian empire would not have been able to enter through the Parthian empire.

Matthew 2:1-3 1. Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem, 2. Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him. 3. When Herod the king had heard these things, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him

Taking into consideration the last section concerning the wars over the territory that included Israel by Roman Empire and the Parthian Empire, it is understandable that King Herod and all of Jerusalem were under stress.  Some historians believed that Israel was hopeful that the Parthians would re-conquer the area from the Romans, but they knew that a war would inflict a great deal of casualties and destruction.

  1. The scripture stated that King Herod and the citizens of Jerusalem were troubled, where if it were just "three wise men" that would not have troubled Herod and the city.  The wise men most likely, as the custom throughout time, had to have come with a military escort for protection, and possible diplomat credentials, with enough of an apparent stature that they were able to have an audience with King Herod along with alarming the whole city.
  2. Because the wise men were identified as coming out of the East, then these men were identifiable. In other words, they were not considered coming out of the North, South or Roman Empire of the West.  Because they were from the East, then everyone would associate them as Parthians.  Additionally, they must have had clothing, mannerisms and military escort insignias that would have identified their place of origin.
  3. If King Herod was troubled, then the question was, why did Herod allow them into his presence to ask questions?  If the wise men were just a few men, then Herod could have had them imprisoned or executed.
  4. The most likely initial thought of King Herod was the wise men were an advanced scouting party for the Parthians that would lead to a future incursion war by the Parthians.  Since King Herod was appointed and accountable to Rome, then Herod's kingship was in jeopardy that had to have caused Herod a great deal of fear.
  5. At the meeting with King Herod, notice that the wise men asked where the "King of the Jews" was born.  Since the wise men were in the presence of the king of the area of Israel, then Herod would have taken the question as an insult and threat to his authority.  If these wise men did not have a military escort which was enough to pose a overpowering threat to King Herod's protection of Roman troops, then Herod could have the wise men immediately executed, which did not happen.
  6. It is this author's opinion that at the meeting of the wise men with King Herod, that the Roman troops in the area recognized that they could not win.  The Romans, and any of King Herod's imperial guard, would have been in a stance of readiness, but kept a distance from the wise men's armed escort.  The wise men made their intentions known so there was no escalation of a fight between the armed forces.

King Herod to appease the situation, inquires the chief priests for information, and sends the wise men to Bethlehem with the request to let him know if they find the baby who is to be King of the Jews.  Additionally, Herod communicated with the wise men secretly, for possibly multiple reasons which included a fear of the Jews in the city for Herod's hidden intention to kill the Baby Jesus Christ.

Matthew 2:4-12 4. And when he had gathered all the chief priests and scribes of the people together, he demanded of them where Christ should be born. 5. And they said unto him, In Bethlehem of Judaea: for thus it is written 6. by the prophet, And thou Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, art not the least among the princes of Judah: for out of thee shall come a Governor, that shall rule my people Israel. 7 Then Herod called the Magi secretly and found out from them the exact time the star had appeared. 8 He sent them to Bethlehem and said, “Go and search carefully for the child. As soon as you find him, report to me, so that I too may go and worship him.” 9 After they had heard the king, they went on their way, and the star they had seen when it rose went ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the child was. 10 When they saw the star, they were overjoyed. 11 On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. 12 And having been warned in a dream not to go back to Herod, they returned to their country by another route.

After the wise men find the Baby Jesus Christ in Bethlehem, the wise men receive a dream not to not return to let Herod know of the location.  These men, as discussed further in this topic, were high ranking Magian Priests who also were interpreters of dreams, where they would have taken the dream not to return as very serious and important to do as instructed.

Magi Sent by the Prophet Daniel in the Past?

The question is why did the wise men come to visit the birth of the King of the Jews?  Did the Star of Matthew 2:2 have something more?

Matthew 2:1-3 1. Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem, 2. Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him. 3. When Herod the king had heard these things, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him

We know from the Matthew 2:2 reference that there was a celestial object that is said to be a star.  The scripture does not state that the star told the wise men that there was:

  1. A baby born.
  2. The Baby was a King and also King of the Jews.
  3. The Baby should be worshipped.

Note: More on the Star of Bethlehem further down in this topic.

To formulate an answer to the question of how the wise men knew, then we need to consider the possibility of these points:

The most likely answer that is backed up by scripture is:

  1. The wise men, Magi, were told by the Prophet Daniel based on Daniel Chapter 9's visitation by the Angel Gabriel that on an exact day the King of Jews, the Messiah, would present Himself to Israel to be executed which would also fulfill the prophecies of Isaiah 53.
  2. Daniel probably set up a select group of the Magian Priests to know about the future prophecy to be fulfilled.  This is the theory by several Biblical Scholars where the select group were sort of a special cabal group within the Magian Priests.
  3. The Prophet Daniel was in charge of the Magian Priests as we learned from the scriptures and historic writings as discussed earlier in this topic.
  4. The Prophet Daniel was highly respected and proven by God to King Cyrus and others who saw Daniel survive the Lion's den and also the works of Daniel for the Persians as also discussed laer in this topic.
  5. The Star, that we know as the Star of Bethlehem, was most likely a very out of the ordinary celestial object.  The Magian Priests, along with most people at that time, studied and used the stars as navigation along with signs of the seasons.  The celestial object was most likely an event that had no previous history and was unique, so the Magi knew something special was happening.  In Matthew 2:9-11, the Star does some further unique things to identify the birth location as discussed further down in this topic.
  6. It is possible that Angels did witness to the selected Magi as the scriptures have many examples of God using Angels to instruct and guide people.  Besides the Angel Gabriel speaking to Daniel, we know that in the Tribulation Period, Angels will be witnessing to great numbers of people during that time so that they will obtain Salvation.
  7. The specific Magi, which came from the East and are Parthians as discussed in this topic, also had to be believers in the God of the Bible because of the Prophet Daniel.
  8. We are not told in the scriptures how many Magi there were in the group that visited King Herod.

Regarding the Prophet Daniel knowing the day in the future that the King would present Himself (as payment/restitution for sins of the world), triggered the cabal group of Magi to look for His Birth, is one of the key proofs.  The Magi descendents from the original Magi, that received instructions from Daniel, made the same calculations which we can do also based on the scriptures.

An except from the Day of the Week Crucified topic:

There is an amazing prophecy in the Book of Daniel which Gabriel had given the exact day to Daniel that the "Messiah be cut off" (Daniel 9:26), which means to be executed.  This amazing prophecy that is described in the Daniel 9, is explained further in the 69 Weeks to the Messiah's Execution topic.   All of Israel should have known and recognized the events from the Book of Daniel and also from reading Isaiah 53.  (Note that Isaiah 53 has amazing encryptions in the text).

We know that Jesus Christ refused to announce or let Himself be announced as the Messiah until Palm Sunday as read in in (Matthew 21, Mark 11, Luke 19, John 12) where Jesus Christ entered Jerusalem riding on a donkey / colt.  Jesus Christ thus preparing to fulfill the day that the Angel Gabriel spoke about when He be would executed for the sins of the World.   This is the key day that the Magi priests could use to know the time period of the birth where the celestial object guided them.

Zechariah 9:9 Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem: behold, thy King cometh unto thee: he is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt the foal of an ass.
Daniel 9:20-23

Visitation by Angel Gabriel
20 And while I was speaking, and praying, and confessing my sin and the sin of my people Israel, and presenting my supplication before Jehovah my God for the holy mountain of my God; 21 yea, while I was speaking in prayer, the man Gabriel, whom I had seen in the vision at the beginning, being caused to fly swiftly, touched me about the time of the evening oblation. 22 And he instructed me, and talked with me, and said, O Daniel, I am now come forth to give thee wisdom and understanding.
Daniel 9:24-26

The time to be calculated for several key events.
24 Seventy weeks are decreed upon thy people and upon thy holy city, to finish transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most holy. 25 Know therefore and discern, that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the anointed one, the prince, shall be seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks: it shall be built again, with street and moat, even in troublous times. 26 And after the threescore and two weeks shall the anointed one be cut off, and shall have nothing: and the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary; and the end thereof shall be with a flood, and even unto the end shall be war; desolations are determined.
Mark 11:7 (Jesus is approaching Jerusalem and his disciples get a colt / donkey for Him.)  7 When they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their cloaks over it, he sat on it.
Matthew 21:6-11

And the disciples went, and did even as Jesus appointed them, and brought the ass, and the colt, and put on them their garments; and he sat thereon. And the most part of the multitude spread their garments in the way; and others cut branches from the trees, and spread them in the way. And the multitudes that went before him, and that followed, cried, saying, Hosanna to the son of David: Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord; Hosanna in the highest. 10 And when he was come into Jerusalem, all the city was stirred, saying, Who is this? 11 And the multitudes said, This is the prophet, Jesus, from Nazareth of Galilee.

Star of Bethlehem

The Star of Bethlehem has many conjectures that are based on planets lining up, to somehow create more light in the sky, which was supposed to focus down on a specific place on the earth.  Many people do not recognize that there are several planets in the sky at different points in the year which can be very bright and confused as a star.  Venus is often the most brightest of the planets visible in the sky that is often confused to be a star.

Some Biblical Scholar contend the star was actually an Angel lighting up the sky specifically in Bethlehem.  The angel theory seems to make the most sense to this author, who is an amateur astronomer, because while the planets and stars are bright in the sky, they do not move that quickly during the night nor with illumination pointing directly toward a place on the ground.  This author believes it was first a celestial object set up by God, and then an Angel that illuminate the specific location of the manger where the baby Jesus Christ was resting with Joseph and Mary.

Matthew 2:9-12 9 And they, having heard the king, went their way; and lo, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them, till it came and stood over where the young child was. 10 And when they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy. 11 And they came into the house and saw the young child with Mary his mother; and they fell down and worshipped him; and opening their treasures they offered unto him gifts, gold and frankincense and myrrh. 12 And being warned of God in a dream that they should not return to Herod, they departed into their own country another way.
Genesis 1:14 And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years:
Job 38:35 “Can you send forth lightnings that they may go And say to you, ‘Here we are’?

Note that there are two interesting theories which are not being indorsed by this author but are mentioned as having possibilities:

  1. An astronomer named Dave Reneke put out a theory that according to a computer model, there was an alignment of the planets Jupiter and Venus on June 17 of the year 2 BC would account for a brightness in the sky.
  2. Other astronomers have theorized there was an alignment of the planets Saturn and Jupiter to account for the brightness in the sky.
