Introduction

The questions that many Christians ask concerning Oppression and Possession by Satanic Forces are:

  1. Is there a difference between Oppression and Possession?
  2. Can a Christian be Oppressed or Possessed?

We know that when a person asks Jesus Christ to be their Savior, then the Holy Spirit indwells the person in the current Dispensation period of what many call the Church Age.  The Holy Spirit is a mark of protection, a guide in life and so much more.  The Holy Spirit will speak to us in what many call our inner spiritual self.  If God gave all of us that ability to receive such a special Gift of the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, then rhetorically is there is a possibility that the Satanic Spirit Realm can also exploit this facet?  Are there scriptures that give us this information?

A Ghost Could Operate?

Around thirty years ago on the way home from work, this author recalls listening to a talk-radio program with a guest PhD speaker discussing the human mind's complexity and simplicity followed by a call-in session for questions and answers.  The guest speaker made a comment that was very interesting which was something to the effect of: "our minds are so simple to operate that a ghost could run them."  The context was surrounding how even when we are asleep, unconscious from head trauma, in a comma or just simply doing daily activities, our brains manage so many things seemingly without effort such as breathing, digesting, pumping blood through our hearts and so much more.

There is an example of the possibilities of our mind's simplicity when seeing how some people can be hypnotized while others cannot.  This author has been at comedy shows where friends where hypnotized, and these friends did some incredibly funny and unbelievable things while being hypnotized which they would never have done normally.  At one comedy event, on a Caribbean Cruise in 2015, the hypnotist had two people, on stage who didn't speak Mandarin (Chinese), believe they were from China (not Americans) and then had them begin yelling at one another in gibberish (thinking they were speaking Mandarin) because they were told that they were mad at one another after a car crash.

Indwelling of the Holy Spirit

As mentioned above, we know that with Salvation, we are given spiritual gifts that come from the indwelling of the Holy Spirit.  In some scriptural references, there are cases that a person received:

  1. Increased physical strength, such as Sampson,
  2. Greater mental acuity, such as King Solomon.
  3. Guidance, such as Elijah.
  4. And of course, external intervention by God in the person's life
John 15:26-27 26 “I will send you the Helper from the Father; he is the Spirit of truth who comes from the Father. When he comes, he will tell about me, 27 and you also must tell people about me, because you have been with me from the beginning.
Luke 11:13 If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him?”
Acts 2:4
Acts 2:7-8
And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance.
7 They were amazed and astonished, saying, "Why, are not all these who are speaking Galileans? 8 "And how is it that we each hear them in our own language to which we were born?

Consider David before he became King David, where he killed Goliath.  Did David have great marksmanship or because of God's gift and intervention gave David the ability for the stone to hit the exact spot on Goliath to kill him?

Another example in the Old Testament, which was a different Dispensation where Believers could lose the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, there was one of the Judges of Israel named Samson who had the Holy Spirit inside of him which also gave him supernatural strength.  When Samson, lost his hair through sinful actions which was part of his Nazirite Vow, then the Holy Spirit left him which also cause Samson to lose his supernatural strength.

Judges 16:17-20 17 So he told her everything. “No razor has ever been used on my head,” he said, “because I have been a Nazirite dedicated to God from my mother’s womb. If my head were shaved, my strength would leave me, and I would become as weak as any other man.” 18 When Delilah saw that he had told her everything, she sent word to the rulers of the Philistines, “Come back once more; he has told me everything.” So the rulers of the Philistines returned with the silver in their hands. 19 After putting him to sleep on her lap, she called for someone to shave off the seven braids of his hair, and so began to subdue him. And his strength left him. 20 Then she called, “Samson, the Philistines are upon you!” He awoke from his sleep and thought, “I’ll go out as before and shake myself free.” But he did not know that the Lord had left him.

Worldly Viewpoint

Oppression in defined as cruel and unjust treatment or using control over someone.  There are various degrees of oppression that can be suffered.  The world does not believe in Possession by other entities such as a demonic entity, yet there are movies such as the Exorcist that gained fans and great financial success.

Thoughts Givens to Us that are Not Ours

The scriptures inform us that Demons and Fallen Angels try to influence a person's:

  1. Desires,
  2. Actions, and
  3. Thoughts

by

  1. Speaking into our consciousness,
  2. Giving us emotional and physical sensations.

We all are familiar with times that a thought enters our mind that we did not know where it originated from.  Many times, it is our subconscious mind reminding us about an appointment, recalling the answer to a question we asked ourselves earlier or simply the process of thinking about anything; but there are times when a thought comes into our mind that did not originate from ourselves.

There are occurrences in which:

A few Biblical Scholars have stated that often the portal for a Godly influence is the ear and Carnal portal influence comes from what we see.

Positive
Proverbs 20:27 And your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, “This is the way, walk in it,” when you turn to the right or when you turn to the left.
Isaiah 30:21 Incline your ear, and come to me; hear, that your soul may live.
Romans 10:17 So then faith [cometh] by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
John 10:27 My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me
Negative
Genesis 3:6 When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it.
2 Samuel 11:2
Bathsheba
It happened, late one afternoon, when David arose from his couch and was walking on the roof of the king’s house, that he saw from the roof a woman bathing; and the woman was very beautiful.

There are many examples in the scriptures that illustrate the capabilities of Satanic Forces regarding the ability to influence thoughts and even manipulate:

Matthew 16:22-23 22 Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him, saying, "God forbid it, Lord! This shall never happen to You." 23 But He turned and said to Peter, "Get behind Me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to Me; for you are not setting your mind on God's interests, but man's."
Mark 1:23-26 23 just then there was a man in their synagogue with an unclean spirit; and he cried out,  24 saying, “What business do we have with each other, Jesus of Nazareth? Have You come to destroy us? I know who You are—the Holy One of God!” 25 And Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be quiet, and come out of him!” 26 throwing him into convulsions, the unclean spirit cried out with a loud voice and came out of him.
Mark 16:9 Now when he rose early on the first day of the week, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, from whom he had cast out seven demons.
Luke 22:3 Then Satan entered into Judas called Iscariot, who was of the number of the twelve.
Romans 1:24 Therefore God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, to the dishonoring of their bodies among themselves,
1 Corinthians 5:5 you are to deliver this man to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, so that his spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord.

Fallen Angels Eidetic and Read Minds?

Many Biblical Scholars speak about Angels having perfection in many ways that include perfect recall or memory, which would have been used to honor God and most likely will be a gift for us in eternity.  We are given scriptures that describe eternity past where Lucifer, at one point, was the anointed Cherub who led praise and worship in Heaven.  As human beings, our memories fade for many reasons that include time and age, because of our earthly body's limitations.

As evidenced in research into Séance, which is prohibited for Christians because it is consulting Fallen Angels and Demons, there is reports of factual information coming out of the Séance that sometimes gives details on people in the past along with geographical information that no one at the Séance could have known about.  There is also the cases of Clairvoyants consulting on criminal Police investigations that actually yield helpful information.  This demonstrates the Satanic Entities, that are participating, have the ability to deliver with great details anything that they have memory, albeit limited.  Of course, there is also a great deal of deception and false information given in a Séance for the destruction of those involved.  It is mixing truth with deception.

We do not know what mechanics in terms of the biology that occurs when a Fallen Angel or Demon possesses someone or tries to oppress someone.  The question can be can asked if they can read someone's thoughts, since they have the ability to influence and even take-over someone's free-will?  As discussed in the last section of this topic called "Thoughts Given that are Not Ours?", we discover that the scriptures state it is:

There is a remaining point to consider.  God assigns Guardian Angels to those who have or will obtain Salvation.  These Guardian Angels are with us and combating against the Satanic Forces around us.  A Fallen Angel will study people's reactions for signs of weaknesses so that they can be exploited.  In our human capacity to understand, think and recall, we still are no match for the intellectual prowess of a Fallen Angel.  The Fallen Angels will know our weaknesses and also be able to read our reactions to temptations to plot our potential for doing wrong.

Hebrews 12:1 Therefore, since we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us also lay aside every encumbrance and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us,
James 4:7 Be subject therefore unto God; but resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

Christians Fighting Against

In Ephesians 6:11-12, we learn about the Spirit Realm battle that is going on all around us.   Notice in Ephesians that "we wrestle not against flesh and blood" besides depraved sinful mankind.  In Daniel and other scripture, we are informed that there is a Spiritual Realm with a command hierarchy that many Biblical Scholars equate to a Military Command structure.

Ephesians 6:11-12 11 Put on the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. 12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.
Daniel 10:20 There is two references to the Satanic Realm's rulers in the Spirit Realm.  The first is Lucifer according Biblical Scholar who is noted as the Prince of Persia and then an unidentified and high ranking Satanic Fallen Angel is the ruler in the Spirit Realm of Greece.  "Then he said, “Do you 1understand why I came to you? But I shall now return to fight against the prince of Persia; so I am going forth, and behold, the prince of Greece is about to come."

The non-Christian world and the uninformed Christians do not understand or believe in the ability of a human being controlled or oppressed by an entity.  These same people who don't believe will accept the premise of a movie where a person is possessed but then will refuse to believe the Biblical explanations.

Many Christians will believe in the Holy Spirit indwelling but don't acknowledge the possibility of oppression or possession by a Satanic entity.

1 Corinthians 3:16 Do you not know that you are a temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you?
2 Timothy 1:14 Guard, through the Holy Spirit who dwells in us, the treasure which has been entrusted to you

Regarding the Christians, who do believe it is possible for Satanic possession and oppression, will not necessarily understand that there is a difference between Demons and Fallen Angels.  It is the opinion of this author the understanding of this topic requires also the understanding difference between Demons and Fallen Angels.

Oppression the Correct Terminology?

For us to understand why Oppression is the correct terminology, we need to look at some points concerning Satanic Forces that try to influence our lives.  While everyone has a sinful nature that is contrary to righteousness that can/will/may sin without the influence of the Holy Spirit, consider these points given to us in many scriptures:

Below are a few examples in the Scriptures:

Matthew 16:21-23 Notice in this scripture that Jesus Christ recognized that Peter was receiving thoughts / ideas were from Lucifer.  Peter was with Jesus and was being influenced by Lucifer to say something that Peter thought was righteous but was actually wrong.  21 From that time Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised.  22 And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him, saying, “Far be it from you, Lord! This shall never happen to you.” 23 But he turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are a hindrance to me. For you are not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of man.”
2 Chronicles 26:16-19 King Azariah grew proud and arrogant where he did something, he knew was wrong.  He persisted in his actions even when the Priests continuously warned him.  The King proceeded because of his arrogance, self-righteousness and ignoring men of God which points to something more than his own thoughts. 16 But when he was strong, he grew proud, to his destruction. For he was unfaithful to the LORD his God and entered the temple of the LORD to burn incense on the altar of incense. 17 But Azariah the priest went in after him, with eighty priests of the LORD who were men of valor, 18 and they withstood King Uzziah and said to him, “It is not for you, Uzziah, to burn incense to the LORD, but for the priests, the sons of Aaron, who are consecrated to burn incense. Go out of the sanctuary, for you have done wrong, and it will bring you no honor from the LORD God.” 19 Then Uzziah was angry. Now he had a censer in his hand to burn incense, and when he became angry with the priests, leprosy broke out on his forehead in the presence of the priests in the house of the LORD, by the altar of incense. 20 And Azariah the chief priest and all the priests looked at him, and behold, he was leprous in his forehead! And they rushed him out quickly, and he himself hurried to go out, because the LORD had struck him. 21 And King Uzziah was a leper to the day of his death, and being a leper lived in a separate house, for he was excluded from the house of the LORD. And Jotham his son was over the king’s household, governing the people of the land.

Solutions to Avoid Oppression

There is only one way to be protected against the attacks of the Satanic Realm and that is to use the Word of God against a thought.

The armor of God as described in Ephesians 6:13 - 19 is:

Notice in Matthew 4:1-11 how Jesus Christ handled the temptations that were given to Him by Lucifer.  These were real temptations where Lucifer was first trying to get Jesus Christ to do anything other than the will of God the Father and then to take another path other than the road leading to the Cross.  Jesus Christ is using multiple aspects of the Ephesians 6 armor analogy.

Matthew 4:4 Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.

Possession in the Scriptures

Possession, as described in the Bible, is when a human being has either a Fallen Angel and/or a Demon(s) indwelling inside their body.  This is a form of cohabitation inside the body that the invading entity is there to the degree of partial control or total control.  The technology on how this occurs is not described.  Additionally, there can be more than one Fallen Angel or Demon inside a human being.

In the times of Jesus Christ there were many exorcisms, Demons commanded to leave a person.  The most widely known is in Mark 5.  Here is an excerpt:

Mark 5:6-9 The unclean man:  6 Seeing Jesus from a distance, he ran up and bowed down before Him;.7 and shouting with a loud voice, he said, "What business do we have with each other, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I implore You by God, do not torment me!" 8 For He had been saying to him, "Come out of the man, you unclean spirit!""  9 And He was asking him, "What is your name?" And he said to Him, "My name is Legion; for we are many."   A legion, at the time of this scriptural passage, is a military term that often reflects approximately 1,000 or more armed men under one commanding officer.

In another example during the times of Jesus Christ walking with us is in Matthew 15:22-28 where Jesus commanded the demon to leave a person.  Notice in the verse that the daughter is possess by a demon and not a fallen angel.

Matthew 15:22-28 22 A Canaanite woman from that vicinity came to him, crying out, “Lord, Son of David have mercy on me! My daughter is demon-possessed and suffering terribly.” 23 Jesus did not answer a word. So his disciples came to him and urged him, “Send her away, for she keeps crying out after us.” 24 He answered, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of Israel.” 25 The woman came and knelt before him. “Lord, help me!” she said. 26 He replied, “It is not right to take the children’s bread and toss it to the dogs.” 27 “Yes it is, Lord,” she said. “Even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their master’s table.” 28 Then Jesus said to her, “Woman, you have great faith! Your request is granted.” And her daughter was healed at that moment.

Possessions Possible for the Christian?

It impossible for a Christian to be possessed as Christians can only be oppressed.  When the Christian invites the Holy Spirit to indwell inside of them then a Fallen Angel of Demon cannot enter that Born-Again Christian as described in many verses such as:

Romans 8:9 You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him
John 14:26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.
Romans 8:26 Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words.

From our earthly perspective, that cannot see into the Spirit Realm, we will never know if someone is truly a Christian, thinks they maybe or just pretending, so we can never definitively state someone is being oppressed or possessed based on external observations.  This author personally knows of many people, who I would absolutely believe they are true Christians but these same people have some very bad habits in their lives.  Some points to remember:

Freed from Oppression or Possession

Can we be freed from Oppression and Possession? The answer is yes and it may require the assistance of other Christians in prayer.  All of us have the Holy Spirit which gives the authority to cast out or send away demons and fallen angels.

Matthew 8:16 When evening came, they brought to Him many who were demon-possessed; and He cast out the spirits with a word, and healed all who were ill.
Luke 4:35 But Jesus rebuked him, saying, "Be quiet and come out of him!" And when the demon had thrown him down in the midst of the people, he came out of him without doing him any harm.
James 4:7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

It is the opinion of this author and the advice:

Regarding the Scriptural evidence, of many, consider one case where Jesus Christ tells His Apostles that they could not cast out a demon possessed young man because it required prayer and fasting.  Note that the Apostles at this point also did not have the indwelling of the Holy Spirit because they had not received Him yet, which many Biblical Scholars point to the book of Acts for the time when everything changed for the Apostles authority over spiritual matters of the Satanic World.

Matthew 17:15-21 15 Lord, have mercy on my son: for he is lunatick, and sore vexed: for ofttimes he falleth into the fire, and oft into the water. 16 And I brought him to thy disciples, and they could not cure him. 17 Then Jesus answered and said, O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you? how long shall I suffer you? bring him hither to me. 18 And Jesus rebuked the devil; and he departed out of him: and the child was cured from that very hour. 19 Then came the disciples to Jesus apart, and said, Why could not we cast him out? 20 And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you. 21 Howbeit this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting.

16 Scriptural Satanic Spirits Named

Many Biblical Scholars state that there are at least 16 specific Satanic Spirit types that either possess or oppress.  It is the opinion of some Biblical Scholars and this author that Demons, unlike Fallen Angels, do not traffic in just one specific area as Fallen Angels.  Demons as discussed above, desire to dwell in a body of a person.

There is a somewhat well-known book from Howard Pittman, which describes his experience of dieing on the operating table, during a medical procedure, before being revived in a Near-Death Experience.  During the period of the Near-Death Experience, he recounts receiving a tour of the unseen world around us along with the 3rd Heaven, where he was told how Fallen Angels specialize in specific areas in a military type command structure.  His book is an interesting read.

This list is from a very well-done researched source called "Strongman's His Name, What's His Game?" by Jerry and Carol Robeson.  It is a free download from many locations on the Internet.
