Some of this information is from excerpts taken from the Day Jesus Is Crucified topic which proves that Jesus was not crucified on Good Friday as traditions maintain.  That does not mean that we cannot celebrate Good Friday, and in fact this author encourages all celebrations of our Savior.  The Crucifixion, of Jesus Christ, was not a tragedy but the greatest achievement of the entire history of the world, which had its plans set before the foundation of the world by our God.

Last Supper, a Beautiful Event

The Last Supper is a beautiful event, containing a betrayal but will have a glorious completion celebration in the future, which is discussed below.  The Last Supper is the time when Jesus Christ:

Jesus Christ forced the timetable of events by Judas Iscariot to start because the Sanhedrin did not want to have Jesus Christ's arrest and execution to occur so close to the Passover event.  The plan, from the foundation of the world, was for Jesus Christ to pay the price for the sins of the world that would give Salvation to those who accepted it, which pointed to Jesus Christ being the Passover Lamb.

Jesus Christ spoke to Judas, John 13:27, to go and do what you must do.

John 13:27 As soon as Judas took the bread, Satan entered into him. So Jesus told him, "What you are about to do, do quickly."

When Judas went to the Sanhedrin, then the Sanhedrin then knew that their scheme was known which made them fear not arresting Jesus immediately, or they would lose their chance.

John 18:31 Then said Pilate unto them, Take ye him, and judge him according to your law. The Jews therefore said unto him, It is not lawful for us to put any man to death:

Judas of Iscariot is the only person who Jesus Christ elected to not give the gift of Salvation, John 17:12.  To fully appreciate the significance of this statement, we need to simply know that God is fully God, where His ways are not our ways, Isaiah 55:8, where He chooses His plans that are perfect.  We all can take 100% comfort in knowing:

  1. It is impossible to lose Salvation once it is received;
  2. God does not want anyone to condemned to the Lake of Fire, but God could not violate His own Character of allowing sin into His presence.  We are made perfect in God's eyes because of the payment for sins by Jesus Christ.
  3. Judas Iscariot was possessed by Lucifer and even after betraying Jesus Christ, Judas Iscariot recognized that he had betrayed innocent blood, Matthew 27:4.
Isaiah 55:8 For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the LORD.
John 17:12 While I was with them, I kept them in your name, which you have given me. I have guarded them, and not one of them has been lost except the son of destruction, that the Scripture might be fulfilled.  (Judas Iscariot is the son of destruction.)
John 13:18-30 18 “I am not referring to all of you; I know those I have chosen. But this is to fulfill this passage of Scripture: ‘He who shared my bread has turned against me.’ 19 “I am telling you now before it happens, so that when it does happen you will believe that I am who I am. 20 Very truly I tell you, whoever accepts anyone I send accepts me; and whoever accepts me accepts the one who sent me.” 21 After he had said this, Jesus was troubled in spirit and testified, “Very truly I tell you, one of you is going to betray me.” 22 His disciples stared at one another, at a loss to know which of them he meant. 23 One of them, the disciple whom Jesus loved, was reclining next to him. 24 Simon Peter motioned to this disciple and said, “Ask him which one he means.” 25 Leaning back against Jesus, he asked him, “Lord, who is it?” 26 Jesus answered, “It is the one to whom I will give this piece of bread when I have dipped it in the dish.” Then, dipping the piece of bread, he gave it to Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot. 27 As soon as Judas took the bread, Satan entered into him. So Jesus told him, “What you are about to do, do quickly.” 28 But no one at the meal understood why Jesus said this to him. 29 Since Judas had charge of the money, some thought Jesus was telling him to buy what was needed for the festival, or to give something to the poor. 30 As soon as Judas had taken the bread, he went out. And it was night.
Matthew 27:4 3 Then when Judas, who had betrayed Him, saw that He had been condemned, he felt remorse and returned the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders,4 saying, "I have sinned by betraying innocent blood." But they said, "What is that to us? See to that yourself!"

Last Supper Symbolizes the future Wedding Supper

During the Last Supper, Jesus Christ tells his Disciples that He will not drink the fruit of the vine until a future time.  The future time will be in His Father's Kingdom which is the Wedding Supper of the Lamb.  This is the fulfillment of many accomplishments and finishing the Last Supper

Matthew 26:29
But I say unto you, I shall not drink henceforth of this fruit of the vine, until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom.

Last Supper Paintings are Scriptural Icons

There are many statues and painting of the Last Supper that can be described as Scriptural Icons or Visual Scriptures.  It is important to remember that we are not given any exact physical descriptions of Jesus Christ such as His hair color, complexion of His skin or His height.  There are many reasons for this as pointed out in the analysis on Pictures of Jesus topic.

The Lamb Slain on Passover

Passover is the High Sabbath day that celebrates Israel exodus from Egyptian captivity and slavery.  When Israel was about to be let go from the Egyptian slavery, the Angel of Death visited the Egyptian Pharaoh's kingdom.  This was one part of the exodus event process while in Egypt.  The Angel of Death killed the first-born of every family and the first born of every animal in Egypt except for those who their household shielded with the blood of a lamb or goat.

God instructed Israel to follow a process of protection that was to be reenacted every year on a specific date.  The scriptural reference had special instructions that were to be carried out precisely and it was known as the Passover.  This Passover event is Messianic, which Jesus Christ became the Passover Lamb for the entire world's sins so that those accepted His Payment, just like Israel did by putting blood on the doorposts of their houses, then a person would inherit Salvation by the blood sacrifice of Jesus Christ.

Exodus 12:5-6 5 Your lamb shall be without blemish, a male a year old. You may take it from the sheep or from the goats, 6 and you shall keep it until the fourteenth day of this month, when the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel shall kill their lambs at twilight.
Exodus 12:8 8 They shall eat the flesh that night, roasted on the fire; with unleavened bread and bitter herbs they shall eat it.  The eating is the next day because it is at night time after the end of the day which was when the sun was visible.
Exodus 12:22-23 22 None of you shall go out of the door of his house until the morning. 23 For the Lord will pass through to strike the Egyptians, and when he sees the blood on the lintel and on the two doorposts, the Lord will pass over the door and will not allow the destroyer to enter your houses to strike you.  The people in the house that were marked by the blood of the lamb were protected.
Numbers 28:17 17 and on the fifteenth day of this month is a feast. Seven days shall unleavened bread be eaten.  This 15th of Nissan.

As just stated, the lamb slain on Passover is a foreshadowing, a model of the future time when Jesus Christ's death would save the world for those who would believe in Him.  Notice these points that point to what Jesus Christ accomplished by the Crucifixion event:

These are some of the points that are more fully explained and examined step by step in the Day Jesus Is Crucified topic.
  1. In Exodus 12:6 "You shall keep it until the fourteenth day of the same month, ... "   This was the selection of the lamb.
  2. It is killed at twilight which is right at dusk.  Exodus 12:6 "It is then the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel is to kill it at twilight."  This is right before the Sun no longer gives it light.
  3. Notice also the Scripture tells us that the Sun grew dark when Jesus was on the Cross before His Death according to Matthew 27:45-50.  This is parallel to Exodus 12:6 reference of "to kill it at twilight".   At twilight is almost completely dark.  Yes, there is the significance of Jesus on the Cross being without light because of the magnitude of Jesus taking on the sins of mankind but it is more than that.  This author believes that God was using the twilight of the Lamb of Passover as an additional pointer for Israel to recognize their Messiah.
  4. It is to be eaten at nighttime, Exodus 12:8, "They shall eat the flesh that night..."  This is the start of the next day because night has started after the twilight.
  5. Notice also that Exodus 12:5, "Your lamb shall be an unblemished male ...".  This should obviously point us to the parallelism of the future complete sacrifice of the Lamb, Jesus Christ, who lived a perfect life and was slain for all.

In summary:

  • The lamb is killed in the afternoon of the 14th at twilight.
  • The lamb is then eaten afterwards, at nighttime, which is the next day, the 15th.   Numbers 28:17 "And in the fifteenth day of this month is the feast: seven days shall unleavened bread be eaten."  This is also known as the "Seven Days of Passover Feast".

10th of Nissan - Palm Sunday, Before the Crucifixion

Starting in the Old Testament, The Exodus from Egyptian captivity was celebrated yearly.  On the 10th day of Nissan, male lambs without blemish, are chosen per Exodus 12:3-6.  This is the day that Jesus Christ rode into Jerusalem as read in Mark 11.  This is also the day that Jesus would proclaim Himself King that fulfilled the Prophecy in the Book of Daniel which Gabriel had given the exact day to Daniel that the Messiah would present Himself as describe in Daniel 9 which is proven in great detail in The Coming Prince and in Day Jesus Is Crucified topic.

Exodus 12:3-6 3 Tell the whole community of Israel that on the tenth day of this month each man is to take a lamb for his family, one for each household. 4 If any household is too small for a whole lamb, they must share one with their nearest neighbor, having taken into account the number of people there are. You are to determine the amount of lamb needed in accordance with what each person will eat. 5 The animals you choose must be year-old males without defect, and you may take them from the sheep or the goats. 6 Take care of them until the fourteenth day of the month, when all the members of the community of Israel must slaughter them at twilight.
Zechariah 9:9 Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem: behold, thy King cometh unto thee: he is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt the foal of an ass.
Daniel 9:26 26 And after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not for himself: and the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary; and the end thereof shall be with a flood, and unto the end of the war desolations are determined. (Messiah be cut off means executed.  There is an interval here in the weeks. The key part of the verse is underlined. For further explanation, see the 70 Weeks of Daniel. This is a Messianic verse as pointed out from many Rabbinical Confirmation such as Yalkut, Volume II, 32b and page 79 Nazir Edition and also Midrash Berishit on page 243 Warsaw Edit.)
Luke 19:38 Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord;
Psalm 118:26 Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!
Mark 11:9-11 9 Those who went ahead and those who followed shouted, “Hosanna!” “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” 10 “Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father David!” “Hosanna in the highest heaven!” 11 Jesus entered Jerusalem and went into the temple courts. He looked around at everything, but since it was already late, he went out to Bethany with the Twelve.  (Notice that they went to Bethany which is listed in the next section below.)

Crucifixion was on a Week with more than one Sabbath

The Disciples asked Jesus where they all would go to prepare for the Passover.  This was right before Jesus Christ is betrayed by Judas.

This is where there is most of the confusion of the day of the week which the Crucifixion occurred is generated.

The verse in Mark 14:12 is translated incorrectly to convey an incorrect meaning.   It should read something to the effect of "The first day of the Festival of Unleavened Bread is approaching, when it is customary to sacrifice the Passover Lamb, Jesus' disciples asked him, "Where do you want us to go and make preparations for your to eat the Passover?Removing the "On" and adding "is approaching" is the correct translation.  They scriptures, in the Gospels, do not tell us that Jesus was eating the Passover Meal.  That does not make sense and would break the purpose of the Passover Lamb model of the Exodus' High Sabbath.

Mark 14:1-2 1 Now the Passover and the Festival of Unleavened Bread were only two days away, and the chief priests and the teachers of the law were scheming to arrest Jesus secretly and kill him. 2 “But not during the festival,” they said, “or the people may riot.”
Mark 14:12 12 On the first day of the Festival of Unleavened Bread, when it was customary to sacrifice the Passover lamb, Jesus’ disciples asked him, “Where do you want us to go and make preparations for you to eat the Passover?”
Mark 14:16-17 16 The disciples left, went into the city and found things just as Jesus had told them. So they prepared the Passover. 17 When evening came, Jesus arrived with the Twelve. 18 While they were reclining at the table eating, he said, “Truly I tell you, one of you will betray me—one who is eating with me.”

(Note that the dinner was on the evening of the 13th of Nissan as Jesus was about to be betrayed, taken into custody by the Sanhedrin, put into mock and false trials throughout the night.)
Mark 15:37-42 37 With a loud cry, Jesus breathed his last.   38 The curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. 39 And when the centurion, who stood there in front of Jesus, saw how he died, he said, “Surely this man was the Son of God!” 40 Some women were watching from a distance. Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joseph, and Salome. 41 In Galilee these women had followed him and cared for his needs. Many other women who had come up with him to Jerusalem were also there.
(The Burial of Jesus)
42 It was Preparation Day (that is, the day before the Sabbath). So as evening approached,
John 13:27 Then after he had taken the morsel, Satan entered into him. Jesus said to him, “What you are going to do, do quickly.”

Jesus is telling Judas, who now was totally possessed by Lucifer, to go and do what you had planned.  Jesus is taking authority over the previous plans against Him.  He is forcing the plans to happen.
