What is Gravity?

At a very introductory level, from many text books that we all learned from in our school experience, and also from many great websites, we know that Gravity is the essential force that attracts objects to one another where mass (the weight) has objects compelled in a stronger attraction.  Gravity is referenced in many fields of science and is essential in understanding:

along with many other fascinating areas in science.  The overwhelming conclusion when reading any documentation on gravity, when used in all scientific theories and equations, is the force of gravity is taken for granted.  In other words, everyone knows that the more mass of an object then the more of a gravitational force is exerted, where possibly the more profound and more difficult question is what attribute of any object, of any size, is making the attraction happen?

Scientist have been speaking and discussing the Forces of Nature as the causes behind attraction in many areas.  The fascinating area is the forces at the subatomic level where one of the first questions that are asked at an early age is:

Atoms are made up of three particles: protons, neutrons and electrons; but even these particles are not the smallest elements as the science of Quantum Physics has discovered.

All atoms with their Protons, Neutrons and Electrons are commonly seen in architectural graphics to resemble something like our Solar System which shows electrons spinning around a center area that is made up of Neutrons and Protons.  Two attributes, of many of the atom are:

Elementary science explanations state this occurs because:

All Atoms, with exceptions, are made up of the three elements where there can be different numbers of each element that compose the atom.  There are cases, such as Hydrogen, which has no neutrons.  Atoms join up with other atoms to make molecules, which are all the known elements of the Periodic Table

Science further gives the high-level explanation that:

  1. The Electromagnetism Force keeps the Electrons "attracted" and "repelled" to the Protons.  This is often demonstrated in elementary science classes with the use magnets, that have different polarity on one side than the other, where two magnets are shown to be attracted and repelled from one another.
  2. The Strong Nuclear Force keeps the Protons "attached" to the Neutrons.
  3. A "difference between the two forces" of Electromagnetic and Nuclear keeps the Electrons "separated" and "linked" from the nucleus of Protons and spinning (orbiting) Electrons.
When reading about all of these areas, as already hinted in the preceding paragraphs, many of us have asked what keeps:
  1. The electrons perfectly moving without losing their spinning and orbit?
  2. The electrons from speeding or slowing down?

The answer to these two questions, along with a few others, is always given as something to the affect of the Forces of Nature keep atom components stable, balanced and having perfectly balanced orbits of electrons.  The real question, is how did this get balanced?

Note: there is the other facets where electromagnetic force becomes stronger and the nuclear force, can cause a splitting of an atom which can temporarily or permanently create a new element along with give-off energy.  This is known as nuclear decay and is part of the science used in creation of atomic / nuclear bombs.

This author is very fond of some of the quips from Paul Davies, where the following is referenced in several topical areas in Biblical Thoughts. 

“Scientists are slowly waking up to an inconvenient truth - the universe looks suspiciously like a fix. The issue concerns the very laws of nature themselves. For 40 years, physicists and cosmologists have been quietly collecting examples of all too convenient "coincidences" and special features in the underlying laws of the universe that seem to be necessary in order for life, and hence conscious beings, to exist. Change any one of them and the consequences would be lethal. Fred Hoyle, the distinguished cosmologist, once said it was as if "a super-intellect has monkeyed with physics".

To see the problem, imagine playing God with the cosmos. Before you is a designer machine that lets you tinker with the basics of physics. Twiddle this knob and you make all electrons a bit lighter, twiddle that one and you make gravity a bit stronger, and so on. It happens that you need to set thirty something knobs to fully describe the world about us. The crucial point is that some of those metaphorical knobs must be tuned very precisely, or the universe would be sterile.

Example: neutrons are just a tad heavier than protons. If it were the other way around, atoms couldn't exist, because all the protons in the universe would have decayed into neutrons shortly after the big bang. No protons, then no atomic nucleuses and no atoms. No atoms, no chemistry, no life. Like Baby Bear's porridge in the story of Goldilocks, the universe seems to be just right for life.”

We know from the scriptures that we should look at everything seen and understand the creation was from the unseen.

Hebrews 11:3 By faith we understand that the universe was created by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things that are visible.
2 Corinthians 4:18 while we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal.

Is the Power behind All Forces of Nature God?

This author heard a poignant and thought provoking thought one day from a great friend "Urdy" while discussing some science related issues.  Urdy said that in all of his reading and viewing of scientific explanations dealing with what really is gravity, he had never heard a really good explanation on what is gravity. 

Urdy said his belief is:

"The Strong Nuclear Force that keeps the nucleus of an atom together, when added together from other atoms expresses gravity.  It is not the weight, mass or size of mass of anything that is causing gravity, but the sum of the forces which grow as more and more atoms accumulate.  The mass is what the energy is acting on.  And the weaker gravitational force is a result of the accumulated strong nuclear force.  The greater the concentration of the strong nuclear force, the stronger the gravity is expressed.  Electromagnetism Force inherent in the particles act as a counter balance and keeps everything from collapsing in on itself.  So yes, gravity is the accumulation of the Forces of Nature."

When taking all known and theorized explanations on the known Forces in the Universe, the next question to answer is there something that is balancing and sustaining everything?  As quoted above from Paul Davies, the universe shows it required God to create it, but even more than that, what is the energy behind all Forces of Nature?

In the past, with unrelated Biblical Studies that this author has heard for many decades, a topic would sometimes state at end of our universe and before eternity starts with the New Heavens and New Earth, then Jesus Christ will "let go" or stop the protection that God is given that is keeping the Universe from operating.  This means in our layman's terms of understanding is God will stop providing the power behind the Forces of Nature.

It is this author's belief that Urdy's comment is more profoundly true than any of us realize, and still even more than that, the Forces of Nature are sustained by God where God's power is the energy that science calls the Forces of Nature.  Additionally, the energy behind the Forces of Nature is most likely linked with the power in light, where we know God is the "Father of Lights".

John 1:1-3 1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 The same was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made through Him; and without Him was not anything made that hath been made.
2 Peter 3:10 -13 10 But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, in which the heavens will pass away with a roar and the elements will be destroyed with intense heat, and the earth and its works will be burned up. 11 Since all these things are to be destroyed in this way, what sort of people ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness, 12 looking for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be destroyed by burning, and the elements will melt with intense heat! 13 But according to His promise we are looking for new heavens and a new earth, in which righteousness dwells.
